“When It’s Dark Out” is the second studio album by American rapper G-Eazy. It was released on December 4, 2015. The challenge was to design the deluxe remastered branding. Incorporating the American whiskey brand "Stillhouse", which he is an investor and the creative director for.
Process
My approach began with identifying the touch points of the designs. I referenced an unused image taken during the original album's press run. I chose this portrait due to his stark expression, pose and the high contrast. I look for portraits which embody the artists personality and essence.
The album's theme is centered around the duality of a Gemini. Balancing the dark and light sides of his personal and professional life. The front cover is white to showcase the "Bright" remastering approach. This term in audio refers to a sound with a slightly attenuated low-frequency range, and a boosted high-frequency range. “Bright” sounds are often characterized by their detail and clear transient response. ​​​​​​​
